The Tianjin Key Laboratory of Pulp and Paper was established in February 2004. It was founded on the basis of the former key discipline of the Ministry of Light Industry and the former key laboratory of the China National Light Industry Council. Its supporting institution, Tianjin University of Science and Technology, is the earliest institution in China authorized to confer doctoral degrees in the discipline of Pulp and Paper Engineering. The university has a first-level discipline doctoral program and a first-level discipline post-doctoral research station in "Light Industry Technology and Engineering". Meanwhile, "Light Industry Technology and Engineering" has been selected into Tianjin's first-class discipline construction list, and "Green Packaging" has been included in Tianjin's characteristic discipline (cluster) construction list.
