State Key Laboratory of Bio-Based Fiber Materials is established on the basis of the former "State Key Laboratory of Bio-Sourced Fiber Manufacturing Technology". It is co-founded by China Textile Academy Co., Ltd. in collaboration with Zhejiang Sci-Tech University and Tianjin University of Science and Technology, with a focus on applied basic research. The former laboratory was one of the first 36 enterprise-state key laboratories approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology for construction in 2007, and the only enterprise-state key laboratory in the textile industry.  

Aligned with national major strategies such as resource security, the "dual carbon" goals, and ecological security, the laboratory addresses key bottlenecks in the field of bio-based fibers, including the "chokepoint" issue in raw materials, low level of green intelligent manufacturing, weak foundation for high-end and high-value applications, and incomplete standard systems. It has laid out three research directions: separation, purification and green manufacturing of bio-based fiber raw materials, green preparation technology of bio-based fibers, and basic research on high-end and high-value applications of bio-based fibers. The laboratory aims to build an independent and controllable system for bio-based fiber raw materials in China, develop new forming theories and technologies for bio-based fibers, and realize large-scale high-end and high-value applications of bio-based fiber materials.    After 10 years of development, the laboratory has supported the realization of a 30% carbon reduction in the green manufacturing of the entire fiber material industry chain. The total output of bio-based fibers has exceeded 20 million tons, and the substitution rate of petroleum-based fibers has increased from 10% to 30%. These achievements have advanced the green transformation and high-quality development of China's fiber materials industry.  

Committed to serving national strategies and adhering to the "Four Orientations" (orientations towards the frontiers of science and technology, the main battlefield of the economy, the major needs of the country, and the health and safety of the people), the laboratory has consolidated theoretical foundations, broken through key technologies, and formed an innovation advantage covering the entire chain of bio-based fibers. It has become a "leader" in applied basic research, a "source" of original technologies, an "incubator" for achievement transformation, and a "gathering place" for high-end talents. The laboratory is striving to build a world-class national strategic sci-tech force in the field of bio-based fiber materials, fulfill the responsibilities and missions of central enterprises, and contribute to the realization of national strategies related to resource security, "dual carbon" goals, and ecological security.
